Who is this article for?
This article will be useful to you if are a company on PartnerStack looking to use segments to add an additional layer of partner organization to your existing group structure.
Segments overview
Segments allow you to organize, categorize, and incentivize your partners beyond your existing group structure. You can create, combine, and delete segments without impacting your existing group structure. Currently, segments can be formed with a combination of up to 10 partner tags.
In short, a Segment is made from a combination of partner tags and allows you to target email campaigns, triggers, and announcements to specific partners outside of your regular group structure.
Common use cases for segments
- A program manager wants a way to send emails to partners in certain countries but has their program organized in Groups by partner performance (high performers, low performers).
- A program manager wants to give bonuses to specific partners based on their performance, and those partners are all in different Groups.
Segments key information
- Segments are currently compatible with Triggers, Email campaigns, and Announcements
- Segments are not visible to your partners. Just as partners do not see their group or tag details, they will not be notified if they are in a specific segment
- Maximum 10 segments in an email campaign
- Maximum 10 segments in a trigger
- Maximum 10 tags per segment
Getting started with segments
Segments must be enabled by your Customer Success Manager. When choosing to use Segments consider whether your objectives can be achieved using groups, or if you need an additional organization layer.
Before getting started with Segments:
- Consider your current group structure. Before adding an additional organizational layer, ensure you understand your current usage of your group structure and if segments will help your program be more flexible, or add complexity that can be avoided by updating your group structure
- Determine your desired tag structure. Segments are built up of tags. Before you start creating your segments, map out the collections of tags you would like to use for each
- Determine a process to attach tags to the right partners. Once you have created your tags and your Segments, you’ll want to ensure you have an internal process (i.e. during application review), or an automated process (using triggers) to tag new partners to ensure they are assigned to your desired segment.
- Assign Admin permissions to any of your company teammates who will be building segments, or creating email campaigns for segments.
Creating a Segment
Note: Tags cannot be created while creating a segment. Tags must be created before creating your segment. For more information on how to create and use tags see the Tagging your partners support guide.
- Log into your PartnerStack dashboard here
- Navigate to your All Partners tab
- Select the top “Segments” tab
- Click “Create Segment”
- Give your segment an internal, descriptive name. This information is not displayed to partners
- Build your segment tag criteria using and/or conditions
- Click “Save Segment”
Before creating a segment it is a best practice to review any current segments you have created, to see which of your tags are already in use.
If you use a tag on multiple segments, your partners will also be in multiple segments. Ensure if you are using a tag on more than one segment, that this overlap is by design, and you consider your email cadence to these segments.
Editing segments
Once you have created your segment, you can edit it at any time by navigating to your Segments and clicking “Manage” next to the segment you would like to update. Your segment’s internal name, as well as segment criteria, can both be updated.
Deleting Segments
Deleting a segment will not delete the tags that were used to build it. Deleting a segment will impact any triggers, email campaigns, or active challenges that were targeting the segment.
Before deleting a segment it’s a good time to once again review your group and offer structure. If your reward offers for partners are based on your Segments consider how deleting this segment will impact how your partners earn rewards.
To delete a segment:
- Navigate to your All Partners > Segments tab
- Click “Manage” on the segment you would like to delete
- In the bottom right-hand corner click “Delete Segment”
- Review the connected reward triggers, email campaigns, and active challenges
- Select the checkbox to confirm you would like to delete the segment
- Click “Delete segment”
Segments, triggers, email campaigns and announcements
Once you have created your segments, you can create triggers, email campaigns, and announcements to target your new segment.
