How are partner referral links tracked?

Who is this article for?
This article will be useful to you if you are a company on PartnerStack wanting to know how partner referral links are tracked.

PartnerStack's partner referral links use 1st party cookies to track customer activity. When a potential customer clicks on a link, cookies are set in their browser and used to track activity back to the referring partner.

Cookie lifetime

  • Cookies last for 90 days after someone clicks on the link.
  • If the potential customer clicks on the referral link again, the 90 days will restart.
  • Cookies continue to track activity even if someone leaves the web page and returns later (without clicking on the referral link again).

If a customer signs up, and/or makes a purchase within the 90-day period after clicking a partner's link, all activities and actions will be attributed to the partner.

Additional resources

Note: for cookies to track customer activity, the customer must sign up/purchase on the same browser and device from which they clicked the partner's link. For example, if a customer/referral initially clicked the partners’ link and signed up in Safari but then used Google Chrome to make their purchase, the activity would not track that referral’s transaction because of the browser change.

See the Potential cases where link tracking fails for more information on how to diagnose and troubleshoot missed referral activity with your partners.

For more information on cookies and tracking see the Google Privacy, Apple ITP 2.3, and your PartnerStack program support guide.
